Kylie McVeigh

Kylie is a warm, compassionate counsellor who provides a safe, non-threatening environment for her clients. She has developed extensive experience working with a range of mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, drug/alcohol dependence and personality disorders.

Kylie McVeigh has practiced counselling psychotherapy for over 10 years treating clients who suffer from mental health issues in both the community sector and private practice.

Kylie understands that mental health can affect at any age as well as have implications on relationships. Therefore, Kylie works with adults individually as well as assists:

  • Couples for couple’s therapy.

  • Adolescence

  • Children suffering trauma related symptoms age 6 years and up.

From her work in the community, Kylie has developed the skills to work with trauma and addictions concurrently. Kylie is of the understanding that one cannot simply give up the addiction first in order to treat the trauma. Often, this has to be addressed simultaneously. In addition to this, Kylie works with a range of mental health issues such as:

  • PTSD (and complex PTSD)

  • Eating disorders

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Drug/alcohol dependence

  • Personality and mood disorders.

When working with couples, Kylie will endeavour to assist the couple to identify and address their relational pattern, conflicts, infidelity (if that is a core issue), and communication style. As Kylie specializes in treating trauma, this focus also extends to work with couples. Often Kylie will be assisting couples whom one or both have suffered trauma in their past. Understanding each individual’s history in particular around attachment style is explored in therapy and how this impacts on the relationship. She will often apply the techniques from Emotional Focussed Couple’s Therapy (EFT) and DBT to assist couples.

Working with children also requires a specific set of skills.  Kylie’s nature is warm, friendly and playful, particularly when working with children. She understands how difficult it is for a child to articulate their feelings and will find light-hearted ways to assist the child in understanding their emotions, as well as provide skills to help manage their difficult thoughts or emotions. If it is suitable, she will also work on processing past trauma through the use of EMDR.

Kylie has achieved her Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Edith Cowan University. Much of this degree specializes in couples and family therapy. Since then, Kylie has completed the following post-graduate training:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) for adults and children

  • Schema Therapy

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

  • Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT).

Kylie has professional memberships in:

  • Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA)

  • EMDR Association of Australia (EMDRAA).

Kylie believes that the therapy relationship is an equal partnership, where both collaborate and work cohesively in order to achieve the client’s desired outcome.
